Job Description:

Our client, located in Northern New Jersey, is a 100 million dollar manufacturer of power distribution equipment and power accessories.  Currently they have a select opening for an Electrical Engineer who can develop power accessories and design, develop and improve new, custom or existing Power products for Manufacturing, Research and Development. He/she will also assist in filing and maintaining UL listings.  The position reports directly to the Manager of Electronic/Electrical Engineering.  No relocation is provided but our client provides an excellent benefits package including a matching 401k plan and full medical coverage.

 

New Product Development. (Prototype to Completion)

  • Design new electrical products, systems and solutions for wiring, filtering, surge and spike suppression, electrical noise mitigation and UPS’s for applications including high-end audio video installation, in order to enhance their position in the Electrical products market.
  • All Design work, Documentation, Assembly to be done using AutoCAD and PADS.
  • Assure that Marketing, Manufacturing, Finishing, and Assembly inputs are considered in the design phase of the project.
  • Provide a Documented history of the development decisions (to be used to make  informed decisions to support production of the new product)
  • As required, plan, perform and direct construction of prototypes.
  • Design review during concept stage, development stage, and production release
  • Verification (sign off) of all documentation relating to the product before production phase.  Inform Documentation Control when completed.
  • Provide a Bill of Materials of all components that will go into an assembled product and it will show each quantity required to make one assembly. These components will include subassemblies, purchased parts, manufactured parts, and raw materials.  The Bill ff Material shall also include the time required for Fabrication and Assembly.
  • As required, monitors progress of development project and compares actual costs with estimates.
  • As required, assume project management role and direct development and implementation of a project plan including estimated requirements for resources-management, labor, materials and time required.     
  • As required, assess vendors for competence, capabilities and resources.      

Existing Product Improvement (Engineering Changes)

  • Assure that Marketing, Manufacturing, Finishing, and Assembly inputs are considered before proceeding with change.
  • Develop a prototype and review. 
  • Provide information not included on Engineering Change Notice to the Document Control and Drafting Group. This information should include any deviation from the original Bill of Materials.
  • Verification (sign off) of all documentation relating to the product change before production phase. Inform Documentation Control when completed.

Custom Product Development

  • Determine feasibility and, as required, adapt existing designs to new customer applications
  • Assist in quoting all non-standard power products.

Drafting

  • Although this will not be a primary responsibility of the Design Engineer, it will be required at times.
  • Create Documentation for the purpose of Fabrication, Assembly, Marketing (A&E), which will be finalized by Drafting personnel.

Technical Support

  • Assist in filing and maintaining UL product listings.  Work with UL field inspectors during site visits as required.
  • As required provide technical assistance to the Power Department Supervisor Assembly manager.
  • Assist Person(s) assigned to Customer Technical Support
  • Assist Marketing by reviewing competitive products.

Various Engineering Dept Tasks

  • As required perform formal function of “checking” Engineering drawings generated by others for completeness, accuracy, tolerancing stack-ups, etc. 
  • Perform within requirements of documented Engineering Systems.
  • Recommend modifications of existing Engineering Systems to improve processes.
  • Maintain good housekeeping practices, and perform in a safe and effective manner so as not to inflict injury to self or others.
  • Inform area management of any hazardous situations in the work environment.
  • Perform any other duties as required by the Engineering Manager - Electrical/Electronic to ensure realization of departmental and corporate goals.

EDUCATION:      

BS in electrical engineering and at least 5 years of experience in the electrical industry OR equivalent industry experience as a licensed electrical contractor augmented with formal education in power quality and basic electronics.

YEARS OF EXPERIENCE:   

Minimum Five (5) years experience in related industry.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • Knowledge of power distribution including transformer operation and design, and power quality considerations.
  • Knowledge of current national electrical code.
  • AutoCAD and PADS
  • ·Electro-mechanical design knowledge
  • Basic electronic design knowledge
  • Excellent communications and organizational skills.
  • Excellent analytical skills for reviewing design concepts and costs.
  • PE License would be advantageous.
  • Knowledge of AV systems desirable.
  • Knowledge of standard test equipment and procedures.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS/DEMANDS (e.g. PHYSICAL):

  • As required lift and/or move up to 40 pounds and occasionally move up to 65 pounds while assembling and evaluating product designs vs. intended applications.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee may work near moving mechanical parts, presses, punches and other heavy machinery. The employee is occasionally exposed to non-temperature controlled environments.

ELECTRICAL PRODUCTS DESIGN ENGINEER REQUIREMENTS:                   

Note: This position falls “in between” electronic engineering and electrical engineering with regard to large AC power distribution systems.

  • EE degree or equivalent design background.
  • An equivalent background may be an electrical contractor’s license and/or an electrical inspector’s license, in addition to product design knowledge.
  • Experience in electrical and electro-mechanical product design.
  • (These products include, but are not limited to, small ac power distribution units, such as, power strips, rackmounted ac power equipment, sequencing equipment for audio/video installations, and fan controllers.
  • Electro-mechanical relay logic circuits.
  • Basic knowledge of Printed Circuit Board layout and electronic controls and circuits.
  • (This is not of primary concern, but basic knowledge is required).
  • Understanding of wiring harnesses and associated hardware and terminations.
  • This includes sizing of conductors and evaluation of insulation properties.
  • Understanding of transformers, surge suppression, and filter circuits, power factor correction.
  • Working knowledge of standard test equipment.
  • (DVMs, Oscilloscopes, etc.)
  • Familiarity with the National Electrical Code (NEC) and UL requirements.

Communication skills:

Must be able to effectively communicate technical aspects of projects to non-technical personnel.

Some technical writing and reporting required.
